I'm writing this from my new favorite Chicago find, Argo Tea. Rumor has it they're going to be taking on NYC in a few months. They have amazing coffee and all their food is baked fresh daily (not to mention they sell crepes with hazelnut, my lifeblood).

Quick wrap up of the first day at BlogHer:

1- Mommy bloggers are taking over the world (one sponsor at a time)

2- The stats about gender stratification in the 'building your expertise' panel were staggering and definitely made you think "why?"

3- Women need to want and BE better represented in the public debate sphere

4- The Threadless office is hands down the coolest office I've ever seen. (guitar hero, photo booth, graffiti walls, fish tanks and amazingly nice people)

5- Lake Michigan does in fact look like the ocean (half cool/half creepy). I still think there's sharks in there

6- The women who started BlogHer know what they're doing

Yesterday I attended an event put on by The Paley Center for Media in support of the new Think Social. Think Social is a platform dedicated to advancing the public interest through social media.

Their aim is to:

Conduct, aggregate and share research and new developments
Recognize people, initiatives and institutions taking bold and innovative action
Enable networking and collaboration among social media, private and public sector leaders

The Think Social luncheon brought together thought leaders of the social media/cause space to discuss tactics, feedback and further ideas for Think Social implementation. As a takeaway, I believe one of the most valuable assets to Think Social is to lead the way in aggregating the do-gooders and non-profits.

One of the (best) problems in the social cause and non-profit space is that it's crowded, very crowded (thankfully so, apparently the whole world isn't full of aholes) but how do we start segmenting these groups and individuals? How are we organizing their success stories and causes? How do we know what's a best practice of cause marketing? If Think Social can highlight leaders in the social good community, but also tell us exactly why they're leaders, what works and what doesn't we'll have better organizations and campaigns moving forward. Which means we'll have more impact to keep this world spinning. PHEW.

And here I was coming around. After spending many years in college doing impromptu impersonations of Beyonce's Crazy in Love dance, which could also be interpreted as an overcompensation of arm movements paired with a horse like strut, I had come begun to really like her. I mean let's face it, she's talented, is married to hova, has a father slightly less creepy than Joe Simpson (although that doesn't set the bar too high), can rock bejeweled dresses/shirts/jeans like it's not inappropriate...and dammit she's sweet.

But then B goes and and changes her name, furthering our public confusion with narcissistic celebrities. What is your name Prince? Do you want to be the artist formerly known as Prince because we all know the real Prince did a lot of sketchy stuff in the 80's? Why does Chris Gaines bear such a close resemblance to Garth Brooks minus the dark angsty bangs in his face? John Mellencamp, why drop the Cougar if you're going to manage a farm, family, denim jackets and beautiful hair with cat-like reflexes? Is it Puff Daddy or PDiddy that was eerily obsessed with JLo and is now eerily obsessed with self-promoted bad reality television? Was it Old Dirty Bastard or Sweet Baby Jesus that went back like babies and pacifiers with Mariah Carey in the unprecedented Fantasy duet?

I can't remember because I'm so damn confused.

Blog Action Day- The Sharing Foundation

Today is Blog Action Day! Over 10,900+ blogs are joining in to discuss poverty with an estimated audience of 11,978,479. Blog Action Day is a perfect example of the growing strength of new media increasing awareness for social issues.

I thought I would use today to highlight The Sharing Foundation, a nonprofit organization. I learned about The Sharing Foundation through nonprofit/social media thoughtleader Beth Kanter. The Sharing Foundation's goal is to help prevent some of the problems of poverty by developing, in consultation with the Cambodian community leaders, programs to improve the health and welfare of these children and their families.

Over 1,300 children in Cambodia receive educational support every day as a result of The Sharing Foundation initiatives. These projects present what might be the only means for the most disadvantaged children to make a better life. Can you think of a better use of $10 or more? Send poor Cambodian to school, provide employment for young women in Cambodia, and help the Sharing Foundation raise additional dollars to help address poverty in Cambodia. On the radar for this month (thanks to TrendCentral) the 6,100 sq feet pop-up co-op event space in West Hollywood, launched by LA-based Little Black Dress, the organization that raises charitable funds through fashion-themed events.

In addition to weekly art and fashion themed events, the LBD space serves as the temporary retail home for a handful of both up-and-coming and established designers and brands. The event, from which proceeds will go towards local non-profit organizations including Dress for Success, The Saban Free Clinic, and Junior League, is poised to go global, with future LBD pop-ups scheduled for Chicago and Bangkok, Thailand in 2009.

My email from TrendCentral today said the trendy new look for fall is the messy bun.

And I quote:

Hate to break it to you TrendCentral, but Lykke Li is not the newest kid on the block to rock the messy bun. High school girls at soccer games, and otherwise completely lazy fashion-ish teenagers across the world have been apathetically throwing their hair up in a haphazard manner for years. TrendCentral forgot to include the most important step in the messy bun process which is the hair must be thrown up when it's still wet, so when it dries you're left with what is known as a 'complete f'in mess' and you feel like an all around rockstar.

I challenge anyone to go through my picture stash at home (placed ever so carefully in a huge box from bed, bath & beyond- the one that offers no organization functionality whatsoever for what is supposed to be very cherished photos) and find more than 10 photos (out of 300+) that does not include at least one girl rocking the messy bun.

It is but a thin line between fashion mavens and FHS girl alum.

So I guess we still have some things that are free in this world. List of things that are motivating me to believe the world is still good because they're free:

1. Kashi Cookies
2. Random canvas bags I've collected at random events
3. the free month of rent we got in our apt because nyc just looooves renters
...and (4) the new IconDial that lets you dial a call for free.

Of course by "free" you need to endure 3-5 seconds of advertisements, but I feel like that goes without saying for anything online. Techcrunch says that for now the service is limited to a few minutes but they may allow calls up to 20 minutes in the future.

All this phone, dial, connect stuff makes me nostalgic for collect calling. I remember how pissed my grandpa would get when I would collect call him (aka: bill him) to pick me up from school. No, I didn't have a quarter. Yes, I was sorry. And Yes, tell grandma I want tuna for dinner. The best was the 3 second window where the automatic voice would ask for your name and you would try and fit the entire explanation for the call into that short short little time.

ie: "pleaaaaase pick me up outside the field house, I'll be waiting by the bench and I'm really really sorry I just spent all my change on Otis Spunkmeyer three for a dollar cookies, and can we drive Allison home, it's completely out the way but is that okay?"

translation: THIS IS NAOMI. I DON'T HAVE A CAR, AND I CERTAINLY DON'T HAVE A CELL PHONE.

I'll admit, our generation can get a little cocky. We've been told since day 1 we can do anything we want, be anything we want, make our dreams come true, reach for the moon we'll land among the stars, and all that other feel good stuff (Alisaleohanson has discussed this many times).

This of course is not a bad thing, but without a doubt an interesting correlation of messaging when paired with unprecedented entrepreneurial opportunity due to that thing called the internet.

The emergence of Web 2.0, and explosive success of startups with famous founders who are barely college graduates fuels the be all that you can be fire, proving to many young twenty-somethings that they are in fact just as cool and awesome as they always believed themselves to be. 'the twenty-something Web prodigies are fun and all, but the veteran visionaries will save the world.'

Of course there's no doubt that our generation is taking advantage of the Web 2.o craze- with countless social networks, startups, application developments and a million other projects that are making young little geeks rich quick. However as savvy as we may be, it is the 'chronologically advanced who are especially successful at solving the problems we increasing- and desperately- need solved. In other words, the high tech future may belong to the over 30-set.'

It's a collaboration no doubt, we need the naive boldness of the young, and the experience and capital of the old folks. If a collaboration is in fact to exist the single most important decision is office dress code. That my friends is where the true generation gap exists.

We like skinny jeans and converse, they still like to wear suits... bizarre.

Check out Audio Bone headphones, the alternative earphones that 'solve all of the hearing, safety and fit problems of the traditional disc-style earbuds.'

Instead of going directly in the ear like typical earphones, they pass the audio signal through your bones or cartilage. Sounds pretty good (weird) except as the NY Time's Tech section points out the bad news is you can hear everything else around you, which you know kind of defeats the purpose.

The article features more pros and cons; basically having signals travel through your bones sounds kind of wack, but then again those free earphones you get with an ipod are in my opinion a small form of torture if worn over a period of 12-14 minutes.

Gawker does a nice little wrap of Mindshare's rebirthed logo which is basically branded the what out.

In a statement from the company on the new logo:

So bold means progressive? If only activists would BOLD all picket signs everyone would get on board- clearly the use of italics is the cause of passivists and regressive thinkers everywhere, bold people bold!

I hate to throw my experience around, but I got an A(-) in my creative PR class where we muddled over which color and font to use for our make believe clients with make believe mission statements. Let's just say if they had outsourced to my team I would have put together the following:

AD Week panel

I went to a very stimulating panel yesterday- AD Week's Panasonic Series for Life, Social Media: Giving Voice to Social Cause.

One of the highlights was a presentation on MeetUp.com-- the site that helps people organize, promote, and participate in real world meet ups. Like DoSomething.org it's an excellent example of an organization using the resources of online tools to produce offline change. A line from their site includes "use the internet to get off the internet." Check check it out.

Project 10 to the 100th

So miss Gwynester just launched her own site GOOP- that features tips on how to 'nourish the inner aspect.' Including goopy'ish stuff like 'where to eat in london' and 'where to stay in austin' and crazy hippie stuff like advising people to 'pause before reacting.'
(I guess freaking out irrationally and screaming in public is un-goop)

On one hand, cheers to mizz Paltrow-Martin for making a really pretty site full of adorable icons like butterflies and forks, on the other hand there's just something weird about taking restaurant tips from someone who pulls in millions of dollars for a film. I can't really picture her at Blockheads Burritos dousing herself in non-macrobiotic salsa and cheap margaritas.

She's one of those people I can't really put my finger on. So I've come up with a list of Gwen Pal pro and cons.

PROS:

* Funny guest on SNL (this is typically my standard form of measurement on a decent human being, although the 1978 episode featuring O.J. Simpson proves a fault in my methodology)

* Starred in The Talented Mr. Ripley

* Married to chris martin who's an EBA (english bad ass)

* Her mom seems really sweet

CONS:

* She hangs out with Madge a little too much

* Moses and Apple as kids name, too weird to be cool

* Starred in view from the top (hopefully you don't recognize this movie title)

* Starred in view from the top (it was really bad)

VERDICT:

Undecided

YET another solicitor came to our office today to try to sell us some office supply services mumbo jumbo. After which, I received some insightful notes from my colleague colin nagy:

solicitation by the numbers:
- percentage of workers in this building wearing suits: 0%
- percentage of times someone comes here in a suit wanting to sell us something: 100%
- odds that these goods/services will entail printers, copiers, postal meters or general office-related infrastructure: 1:1

I often get made fun of because I don't have internet at home. Granted I don't have cable, or a clock in my room which makes the argument that my lovely little apartment is cute in kind of a weird, socially unacceptable way.

I'm all for compulsively checking my gmail account and blasting out naomicanblog links on my Facebook page. However, like many new yorkers, I'm on the computer most of the day at work, and I'm rarely home at night so why not save some cash every month? That way I can save up to buy something really important, like dry roasted peanuts and clear hair ties.

Plus if you really do need to be connected, NY is home to many wifi providing places. Check out NY Mag's list of wifi location s, part of their Everything Guide to Belt Tightening article.

Twitter proves it continues to be the new badass in town. First it trumped emails by announcing Joe Biden as Obama's running mate, and this week Twitter announced the partnership with Current TV that will stream tweets on the cable networks programming during the presidential debate.

From Wired:

“Hack the Debate” will broadcast filtered tweets across the screen as overlays during the presidential debates and send a live stream of twitter comments to Current.com during the broadcast online.

The partnership is fitting, considering that Current, co-founded by Al Gore, is a network focused on user-created content. Many networks and journalists (including wired.com) look to Twitter as a research source, but this is the first official partnership that will integrate the service into more traditional media.

The telegraph in UK reports that cleric Sheikh Muhammad Munajid- former diplomat at the Saudi embassy in Washington DC, announced yesterday that under Sharia law, both household mice and their cartoon counterparts must be killed. Mickey Mouse--- dead? Seems like a pretty bold statement.

Don't get me wrong, I'm now that down with mice. After enduring the standard NYC renting experience of jumping on my couch and screaming at the top of my lungs while frantically screaming and pointing at something scurrying in the corner (a reaction I thought was over dramatized in movies until I surprised myself by reacting the exact same way), I can't say I'm thrilled at the site of the little bastards. However, I'm not sure if I'm ready for a complete Mickey Mouse/Tom & Jerry massacre just yet. At the end of the day, who doesn't love a saucy little rodent shirtless with red shorts?

And not to state the obvious, but no Mickey Mouse- means no Mickey Mouse club. I mean who would have discovered Britney's musical talent or Ryan Gosling's angst?

And what about Fantasia? That creepy flick that has confused kids everywhere for years. You got so excited because it came in the white plastic movie cover, which was the universal sign of a rockin disney movie- like say Little Mermaid or Lion King- only to be thrown for a complete loop when nobody talks, brooms start dancing everywhere, and Mickey transforms from your best buddy to a power hungry madman in an oversized hat.

A waffle is like a pancake with a syrup trap.

Tip from one Jason Hirabayashi, late comedian Mitch Hedberg has a new album out entitled Do you Believe in Gosh put on by Comedy Central Records. The new album contains nearly 40 minutes of previously unreleased stand-up material.
